Adding a sample sentence, with source, to a term

To comply with ISO12616, all terms should have a documented source. A term will usually have been uttered or written in a sentence at some time and this will be useful evidence that the term is real as well as giving clues to its meaning and grammar. Such a sentence containing the term will almost always be available to a translator and it is simple to add the sentence to the term collection. Cycom's software permits attaching a source to all descriptions including sample sentences and so this serves to satisfy the ISO12616 requirement.

Preconditions: You have navigated from the Club Cycom "Welcome" screen to the top level screen of the "Term entry display" tool. You have either created a term entry with term, or you have opened an existing term collection. The term entry identifiers and terms are visible in the top level term entry display screen.

  1. Use the mouse to point the screen pointer at the center of the text that is the term designation and press the right-most mouse button. You should see a context sensitive menu popup as shown below. If your menu doesn't contain the options you expect, you may have missed the term when pointing with the mouse. Try again. Each pop-up menu is context sensitive which means that the menu options vary according to the object under the screen pointer at the time of the right-click.

  2. Choose the "Edit term (...)" menu option. This will bring up the term editor screen. Select the "Descriptions" tab, and choose "sample sentence containing the term" as the value for the combo box labeled "Type of description to create". Your screen should now look as shown below.

  3. Press the "Create" button. This will bring up a text description editor. Type in the sample sentence for the term. If your sample sentence is on the system clipboard, then you may paste it into any text field by using the "Control-V" key combination. Your screen will then look as shown below.

  4. Press the "Citation editor" button. This will bring up the citation selector screen. If there are any pre-existing citations that you could reuse, then they will be found and listed here. However there are none listed yet so your screen looks as shown below.

  5. Press the "Create" button. This will bring up the citation editor screen. Invent a short identifier (without spaces) for the citation and provide full details of the source in the relevant fields. Your screen will then look as shown below.

  6. Press the "Commit changes and close" button. You will then be returned to the citation selector screen where you will now see your new citation listed and highlighted as shown below.

  7. Press the "Use selected citation" button. You will then be returned to the text description editor where you will now see your invented citation identifier listed as the content of the source field as shown below.

  8. Press the "Commit changes and close" button. You will then be returned to the term editor screen where you will now see your new sentence listed in the list of text descriptions as shown below.

  9. Press the "Commit changes and close" button. You will be returned to the top level term entry display screen and will see you sample sentence displayed with the other terminological information items.

Congratulations! You now have a useful ISO12616 compliant term entry in your collection. Save it!
